Young people from across South Leicestershire have completed Alberto Costa MP's 2026 Westminster Summer School, following three days of activities designed to provide a unique insight into Parliament, democracy and public life.
The Summer School brought together local students aged 16-19 for a programme of visits, workshops and discussions in Westminster. Participants toured the Palace of Westminster, observed parliamentary proceedings, visited the UK Supreme Court and Westminster Abbey, met professionals working across politics, journalism and public service, and took part in a parliamentary-style debate chaired by Alberto Costa MP.
Throughout the programme, students had the opportunity to learn more about how Parliament works in practice, engage directly with decision-makers and develop skills in debating, public speaking and critical thinking. The Summer School was designed to encourage greater understanding of democracy and inspire young people to take an active interest in public life.
Alberto said:"It was a pleasure to welcome such a talented and engaged group of young people from across South Leicestershire to Westminster. The students approached every activity with enthusiasm, curiosity and professionalism, asking thoughtful questions and showing a genuine interest in how our democracy operates.
"I hope the Summer School has given them a valuable insight into Parliament and the many opportunities available to them in the future. They should all be incredibly proud of their contributions throughout the week."
Following the success of this year's programme, Alberto Costa MP hopes to build on the initiative in future years by continuing to create opportunities for young people from South Leicestershire to experience Westminster first-hand, while also developing a similar programme closer to home in South Leicestershire.
Summer School participant Charles Lawrence said:
“The Westminster Summer School was an incredible opportunity that strengthened my passion for public service and politics, deepened my understanding of how our democratic institutions work and gave me the privilege of spending time with Alberto Costa MP and his team. The experience was thought-provoking, inspirational and truly unforgettable."
